Visit Alexandria

Just minutes from DC, but it feels like a world away

Conveniently located within eyesight of Washington DC, Alexandria is nationally recognized for its early-American architecture, variety of hotels, unique boutiques, award-winning restaurants and historic attractions.

Only five miles from downtown Washington, D.C., Alexandria is easily accessible by four Metro stations, three interstate highways, an Amtrak station, and the D.C. region's three major airports. Travel the length of Old Town's main street between the King Street Metro station and the Potomac River on the free King Street Trolley. Running daily, the Trolley stops every couple of blocks allowing riders to hop on and off to explore the shops, restaurants and attractions surrounding King Street.

Founded in 1749 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Alexandria has cobblestone streets lined with original 18th and 19th-century buildings now housing shops, restaurants, museums and private residences. History comes alive in the streets of Alexandria where this country's founders and presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama have walked, shopped, dined and lived. Reasons to visit Alexandria include restaurants led by chefs eager to make their mark with the freshest, local ingredients, a boutique district able to satisfy the serious shopper's search for designer clothes, shoes, antiques and home decor; a thriving art scene; festivals; live music; and a variety of accommodations.
